Historical Roles
I have to say some of the supporting artists/extra TV and film roles I've had were hard work; you are on your feet all day and repeating the same action over and over again. Some roles were very easy and fun like playing a passenger on a tube train. All I had to do was travel on the train, get off and repeat.
Speaking of trains, the other day I was working on this old train from the 1930s on a special service running on this particular tube line from west to north-east London. My role was to make sure passengers were in the right carriage and then travel in the carriage with them ensuring there was no eating or drinking in the carriage. As the passengers were well behaved, I spent most of the hour engaging with passengers and listening to the expert volunteers sharing the history of that tube line.
The interior of the tube was like being on a historical film set with "props" from the 1970s. I was shocked to see cigarette adverts. Then again, in the good old days, people used to smoke on public transport.
I loved seeing the surprise look on people's faces, who were waiting at various tube stations, as the train drove by. Some of them quickly took photos to capture that moment.
When we arrived at the end of the line, we let passengers off and prepared to get the next set of passengers on. One of the passengers was an old friend I worked with on a production years ago. She and her husband had booked to travel on the train, though she was a reluctant passenger. 😆 On the trip back to west London, I travelled on the same carriage with them. At one point I said to her that it was like being on set.
After travelling back and forth a few times, I was given permission to finish in north London not far from where I live.
Before I start every day, I always ask God to make my day easy, fun and wonderful. That train job was certainly very easy and fun. The wonderful thing was I was reunited with an old supporting artist friend.
The last historical TV drama I was on was "The Crown." I am so grateful to still get lots of opportunities to work in historical places and sceneries. ❤️
