About Law, Grace and Mercy
When the bus I was on was approaching this bus stop, no one rang the bell so the driver continued. I heard this woman downstairs yelling at the driver and asking him to stop, but he continued driving. The passenger kept saying, "Oh God." Finally,, the driver stopped at the next stop, about quarter of a mile away, and the passenger got off.
I believe the bus driver represents the Law, which shows no mercy. If you break the law, which in this case was not ringing the bell for the next bus stop, the driver won't stop.
Even if he wanted to show mercy to the passenger, he couldn't anyway because there are cameras on the road. I know for a fact that if a bus driver gets caught stopping where he's not supposed to, he will either get disciplined or lose his job.
I believe that's the danger of AI and robots taking over many human tasks in the future. AIs are like the Law which will punish you if you don't follow the rules.
How do you apply the Law while showing mercy at the same time?
I am reminded of the woman in the Bible who was caught in adultery. (John 8: 1-12) The scribes and Pharisees brought her to Jesus for his opinion. The Law of Moses stated that the woman should be stoned to death because of her sin. They were testing Jesus to see if He would break the Law. Jesus, who knew He hadn't come to break the Law but to fulfil it, said to them:
“He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” (John 8: 7)
All the woman's accusers who knew they had sinned, dropped their stones and left. After Jesus told the woman He didn't condemn her, He warned her not to sin again. In other words, Jesus showed compassion while still acknowledging the Law.
If society is going to have robots and AI, which represent the Law, society is always going to need the human touch that shows the mercy and grace of God.* ❤️
* Mercy is not giving you the punishment you deserve; and grace is giving you the forgiveness and blessings you don't deserve.
