Mary and Martha
It is written in the Bible (Luke 10: 38-42) that Jesus went to visit Martha and Mary. Martha welcomed Jesus into her house. We are told while Martha was busy serving, Mary sat at Jesus's feet to listen to His teachings. 7
I can imagine Martha was busy preparing food and snacks for Jesus and His disciples. Martha got resentful about her sister not helping her and said to Jesus:
“Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” Luke 10: 40
Jesus answered:
“Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10: 41-42
In this story, Martha represents service and Mary our relationship with God. Jesus is pointing out that the one thing needed from us is being in His presence and feeding from Him.
I find there is a Martha spirit in the church. As soon as you join a church, you are encouraged to serve. While it's good to serve, if it's your calling, you can get so engrossed in your duties and people's expectations of you that you forget about your relationship with God.
I have stepped back from that Martha spirit and focusing on developing my relationship with the Holy Spirit in me. He is constantly loving me and teaching me. It's like being at university again studying a life long curriculum that has been designed for me.
Service is good but if it's not Jesus centred, it profits nothing.
Thank you, Jesus! ❤️
