Joy Makes My Job Easy
I work for various agencies. Every time I am booked at a client, I am representimg my agency.
In truth, as a Chistian, I am actually representing Christ. I believe it is God who provides the jobs: health for me to be strong to work; public transport to get me to work; and the resources to enable me do the job.
I was booked to work for two days as front of house at this large corporate event. Several of us had to scan visitors' badges as they came in. Although it's quite a simple job, it is quite physically demanding as you're standing up for hours (apart from when you're on your break). Because visitors keep coming in and out, you are constantly scanning, which can be very monotonous.
I was inspired to do my job a different way. While scanning I addressed each visitor by their name. You should have seen the look of joy on their faces when I called their name. There were the odd names that I couldn't pronounce. In those cases, I smiled and thanked them.
I was now enjoying myself and exchanging banter with visitors as they came in. When I noticed this guy had a French name, I spoke the little French I still remember to him and he was very impressed. The next time he saw me, he said bonjour.
I asked a guy called Fernando if he was named after the Abba song of the same name. He said he was and it was his favourite song.
I told one guy called Matt that his name was very popular at the event. He said as Matthew means Gift of God, the hall must be full of God's gifts.
I noticed a guy whose name was Jesus. He was soon followed by another guy called JC, which made me smile.
I also started getting feedback from visitors. They were now addressing me by my name on my badge (not Enocia) and smiling back at me. One visitor told me to keep smiling. Another visitor thanked me for being so cheerful. Another thanked me for doing such a good job.
At the event, they had this brass band performing old school music at various parts of the hall. I was tapping along to their songs. At the start of day two, the band played the song "When you're smiling, the whole world smiles with you." After they finished, I thanked them for playing my song.
After work, I stopped off at the food hall to get some chips. A friend, who was working at another event, joined me. While we were eating, this woman walked by and stopped to thank me. She said she and her colleague had really liked my attitude.
I believe it was the Holy Spirit, living inside of me, who was bringing out the joy that I was able to share with the visitors. Joy made my job easy and enabled me to have fun with my colleagues.
Thank you, Holy Spirit, for giving me Your joy. ❤️
